Brú na Boinne

The Bend of the Boyne, or Brú na Bóinne, has been an important ritual, social and economic centre for thousands of years and its universal value was recognized in 1993 when it was designated a World Heritage Site, only one of three on the island of Ireland. The Heritage Council in collaboration with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is currently drafting a Research Framework for Brú na Bóinne, re-assessing key priorities and looking at where future research should be directed.

Your comments and suggestions about the future of research in the WHS are greatly appreciated.

Moyrath Castle Visit

Mr Gerald Potterton is to be highly commended and warmly congratulated on the excellent tour he gave of his family home, Moyrath Castle.
Members of the society were delighted to see and hear the history of the property.
Below are some of the prepared notes from the tour delivered on the lawn of the castle in some what sunny but blustery conditions. Members were also treated to delicious home cooked snacks by June Wilkinson (Council Member) who is setting a very high culinary bar.!!!!!!!!

Major Field Name Survey for county Meath

There are approximately 100,000 fields spread across 44 parishes and 1,600 townlands in the county. A survey of these, to include names, lore, legends, features and any known historical connections is to be undertaken over the next two years. To this end the survey will be launched on Tuesday, 13th May in the Ardboyne Hotel commencing at 8pm. Representatives of the joint sponsors of the survey – Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, the IFA and the Meath County Library Service will address the meeting at which a steering committee will be elected to see through the project for the next 2 years. To undertake a survey of this magnitude, the cooperation and support and active engagement of a large number of people across the county will be required.
