Masters run well. Juveniles go missing
04 Oct 2009
Well Done to the masters. Don Mahon led the Trim team to an excellent bronze in the county masters cross country championships at Stamullen.
The Wexford native Mahon has been a revelation this season and his second place in a very competitive M35 grade behind Shane Boyle, Bohermeen will be great encouragement for him in his debut season.
John Canning was third in the M40 grade while Brian Cully took a similar placing in the M50 grade. The club team of Mahon, John Canning, Declan Swords and Enda Markey earned a great third place in the team event behind the highly fancied Dunshaughlin and Bohermeen teams.
In the juvenile race you wouldnt even need one hand to count the runners who turned up to compete. We were represented by just three. Thanks and well done to Caoimhe Eivers 4th U/12, Niall Durkin and Ruth Quinn on your efforts. Thanks also to their parents for their interest. Read On... |

Maureen and Julie Ann take part in the Frank Duffy 10
26 Aug 2009 The Frank Duffy 10 miles is the second race in the 3 race Adidas Series which gives many runners in race preparation in the countdown to the Dublin City Marathon. This years race attracted a record field of 6000 to the Phoenix Park last Saturday. Two women from Trim AC took part in the race with
Maureen Lowther recording a time of 1h16m05s and Julie Ann White put in a great run over the longer distance to finish in 1h29m33s. The next round of the series is the Dublin Half Marathon also in the Phoenix Park on saturday 26 Sept. The half is generally a key indicator of form and progress for anyone targetting the Dublin Marathon. If you have any inclination or intention of undertaking the 30th DCM you could do a lot worse than get an entry in for the Half.

Leinster underage success
29 Jun 2009 LEINSTER underage championships. The Leinster track and field championships were held at Tullamore Harriers stadium last Saturday and Sunday. It was a very successful weekend for our older teenage athletes and they are now preparing for the national championships at the same venue next month. In the boys under 16 hammer Shane Aston added 4 metres to his previous best to claim silver with a 34.70m effort. He also got second in the javelin with a seasons best of 32.30m. Emma Foley finished in second place in the under 17 high jump. Jose Diago who joined the club in May after a successful introduction to throwing in the North Leinster schools finished in third place in the under 16 hammer. In the under 14/15/16 categories only the top four in each province qualifies for the nationals and Dublin is the fifth region. Trim AC will have its highest representation for many years at this years event as the fourth place efforts by Clare McLernon, (high jump and long jump), Jake Shanley (shot putt) and Oisin Walsh (long jump ) means that these will join Shane , Emma and Jose. A back injury incurred during the week in a traffic incident badly hampered the efforts of Andrew Lynam in the discus and hammer, two events that require maximum rotational efforts. However he is optimistic that he will have recovered sufficiently over the next few weeks to contest the nationals. New recruit Lewis Gregory put in a good effort to finish 7th in the discus. The club will be in touch with parents about the under 9/10/11/12 s who have qualified from Leinster for the next phase of the pairs event and the individuals.

07 Jun 2009
On Saturday last, June 6th, Trim AC fielded an 8 person team in the 120k Wicklow Way Relay. An event limited to 35 teams. The team aptly named 'Trim Bravehearts' lived up to their name running through the torrential cold rain which they encountered on the climbs and descents starting with David Hawcroft departing Kilmashogue at 7am. Followed by Brian Cully, Danny Byrne, Ann Tobin, John Rowe, Brendan Gilligan, Declan Swords and Maureen Lowther (in order of appearance). The route brought the runners through Powerscourt, Glendalough, Drumgoff, Aughavanagh and into a very wet Shillelagh, finishing 25 minutes faster than last year. Well done to everyone on this test of endurance.A great day's work on one of the worst days of the year.

One hundred and eighty runners went to the line for the 5km race through the townlands of Kilshancoe, Kilmurry, and Gorteen. The race which year used chip timing for the first time. The course was the same fast traffic free route as used for the past 4 or 5 years . The May Mix
11 May 2009
Great running in Belfast
The Belfast Marathon took place in blustery conditions on May Bank Holiday Monday. There were 2215 individual competitors in the marathon. Among them was Aine Kenny who turned in a great 3h32m performance for the classic distance. Aine is returning from serious injuries sustained in a collision last summer and this performance is a credit to her great attitude, enthusiasm and spirit. Trim AC entered a mens and womens team in the marathon relay. There was an increase of 200 teams in this years relay. It is easy to remember how many took part this year because 2009 teams completed the course.
The Trim teams were very pleased with their performances. The mens team of Enda Markey, John Rowe, Brian Cully, Nick Nally and Ciaran Tobin were surprised to find themselves in 36th place out of a total of 2009 teams. The womens team made it into the top 200 teams finishing in 193rd..The members were Ann Tobin, Carrie Brogan, Maureen Lowther, Helen Power and Marion Buckley and are all regulars at our Tuesday night meet and train group. Schools Championships
The North Leinster schools athletics championships took place at Santry last Wednesday.Andrew Lynam was second in the intermediate boys hammer, Clare McLernon finished 3rd in the intermediate girls long jump. The second day of the North Leinster schools cships take place on Weds 6th May and Clare, Andrew, Shane Aston and Emma Foley will be in action again seeking qualification to the Leinster schools finals.
Summer League
The first night of the Meath track and field summer league was held at Claremont Stadium last week. Peter Honer, Eoin Sweeney, Jake Shanley, Craig Buttimer, Edward Doran, David Honer, Emer Ferry, Ruth Quinn, Oisin Walsh and Lewis Gregory put in some fine performances. There will be a furhter 3 rounds to the league over the next 2 months and these performance will be of benefit to the young emerging athletes when the various county and provincial events start up.
AAI 10km Road RACE cships
Navan AC hosted the national 10km road championships over 2 laps of the St Stephens Day course through Mullaghboy,Athboy Rd and Commons Lane on 27th April. The club masters team of David Hawcroft, Pat Comey, John Canning and Ciaran Tobin ran well in the county decider. The top Meath finisher was Robbie Matthews, Dunshaughlin AC who was part of the leading group for much of the race until the eventual winner Connolly and Mulvey made their break. Matthews finished in ninth place overall with a very good time of 31m48s. The only other senior male runners from the county who took up the challenge of the national 10km championships were Derek Croal 33m34s and Anthony Corrigan, 38m49s. The masters categories were very hotly contested and there were some good performances from local runners. In the M 45 grade Matthews club colleague Paddy Mangan ran a 34m23s to finish third in his age group. The other medal winner in the age groups was Rose Healy from Fr Murphy AC whose 58m39s effort earned her top spot in the W60 grade. Pat Comey, Trim AC was just outside the medals in the M 60s with a 39m58s run and in the M35 race Mark Rowe from South O'Hanlon finished 5th in a time of 33m47s.
There was a great show of strength from the W45 ranks in Meath with Linda Gunning, Bohermeen 4th, Mary Watters 5th and Breda Clifford 6th. The county 10km championships were incorporated into the event and the top three men were Robbie Matthews, Derek Croal and Marke Rowe. The womens top three were Orla Timmons, Star of the Sea AC, Brigid Clarke and Maggie Higgins both from Na Fianna.
The previous day Brian Cully travelled to Inis Meain in the Aran Island fro the Aer Arann half marathon. Apart from the rugged terrain of this unique event competitiors often have to contend with exposure to the full effects of Atlantic winds. This years race had plenty of fresh air. Brian Cully got stuck into his task and completed the course complete with "wind tunnel" effects in a good time of 1h35m. His next Atlantic coast half marathon will be on Achill later in the summer. Best of luck to Brendan Gilligan in the Edinburgh marathon at the end of May.
All the club and the local running fraternity wish a speedy recovery to fromer club chairman and long distance mentor/advisor Joe Brady. Looking forward to seeing you back on your fast feet real soon.

Convention Presentation
08 Feb 2009 The 2009 Meath Athletics Board convention took place in Claremont Stadium, Navan on Wednesday 4th February. There were very few changes in officers with most of last years officers returned unopposed and a reluctance by other nominees to contest.
The motions put forward for discussion dealt mainly with age group directives from AAI, masters competition gradings and child protection. A number of motions dealing with aspects of competition and championships were forwarded to the Leinster AGM or will be dealt with by the competition committee.
A new county president was installed for the year by former AAI president Michael Heery. The honorary president for 2009 will be Larry Daly, from Trim AC who has been involved in athletics since the 1940s. He enjoyed a successful career as a distance runner with Boardsmill AC which continued into the 1960s. Larry was a founder of Yellow Steeple AC in 1971 which came into existence following the very successful launch of the community games organisation. This club later became Trim AC and he steered the fortunes of that club for many years. In accepting his chain of office he said he was honoured to be chosen for the role and looked forward to working among old friends.
Michael Heery told delegates that Larry and Dan Bagnall invited him to join the Boardsmill club after his victory as an individual athlete in the Meath cross country championships of that year at Culmullen. He described how Larry in the 45 years he had known him always gave “ quiet and wise encouragement to runners”
The outgoing president Lena Heffernan , Na Fianna AC thanked the chairman for his kind remarks. The highlight of her year was the promotion of the county womens team to Premier status in the track and field league. She also wished all the medallists and award winners to whom she made presentations during the year continued sporting success and enjoyment.

Hill run wins for Maureen and Dave
28 Dec 2008 A record field of runners from the throughout the north east assembled at Mullaghmeen Forest near Oldcastle for the third staging of the Meath Hill Running championships. The local organisers plotted a wonderful route through the largest planted broadleaf forest in Ireland. In a year which saw many events marred by soggy conditions, it was a source of relief for all the athletes to find the going “good” in late December. Recent tree felling near the summit of the race has revealed one of the finest views in the country with Lough Sheelin glistening in winter sunshine to the north and the distant Wicklow Mountains and the Slieve Blooms rising on the southern horizon. Most of the runners only managed a brief glance given the great effort required in getting there.
The local athletics board invited runners from surrounding counties to take part in the open race and drew support from Cavan, Westmeath and Dublin club members. Trail and hill running has grown in popularity in recent years. Last spring the trail series hosted held in Belvedere, Mullingar consistently attracted over 200 entries. The addition of Mullaghmeen event to the local athletics calendar has proven very popular. Great credit is due especially to the committee and members of St Brigids athletic club who made sure all aspects of this race went to plan.
Maureen Lowther won the W35 grade in a time of 24.00 and David Hawcrofts race number 1 proved prophetic when he emerged as the number one M55 competitor. The club also picked up 2 bronze through the efforts of Ann Tobin and Brian Cully. All four were part of the clubs Wicklow Way Relay team aka BRAVEHEARTS in 2008.

Great runs in Nationals
14 Dec 2008
The national cross country championships took place at Ballyhaise, Co Cavan last Sunday 7th Dec.
Three members of Trim AC were in action. At under 15 level Tadgh Eivers ran a suberb race to finish 16th in his first ever appearance in the national cross country championships. He was the third Leinster finisher and in the process turned the tables on quite a few of those he ran against at Abbeyleix last month.
Caoimhe Eivers and Niall Durkin ran in the colours of Meath in the inter counties competition. They were both selected on the basis of the bronze medal placing of the county in the Leinsters last month. Caoimhe was the fourth member of the Meath team in 51st position and made a great contribution to the team points tally which put them in 5th place.Niall Durkin put in another great run to be the third Meath runner in a field of 145 runners. Well done to all on their excellent cross country efforts this winter.
The next big cross country event on the cards for the Trim juveniles will be the 2009 Ras na hEireann which is being staged in the wonderfully appointed Oldbridge Estate between Slane and Drogheda.

Comey in cross country win
19 Nov 2008
TRIM AC NEWS
Comey Gold in Swansea
Pat Comey was the second Irish finisher in a gold medal team effort at the British and Irish Masters cross country championships in Swansea last weekend. He was also the sixth individual in the over 60s grade. Pats great effort comes just a month after he won the Irish trial in a very tight finish at the Phoenix Park. The latest international medal will look well alongside the world half marathon team bronze which he claimed in San Sebastian 2 years ago. The Irish team had other strong Trim links with the first W50 runner Mags Greenan ( formerly McEntee) and Terry Mee doing well in the M65 race. (both are members of Clonliffe Harriers in Dublin)
Cross Country Kids do well
Well done to Nial Durkin, Caoimhe Eivers, Tadgh Eivers and Mark McDonnell on their fine performances on the second day of the Leinster cross country championships. All four made light of the rough weather and took to the challenge with great determination. It was great to see nearly one thousand youngsters from throughout Leinster taking on their events and giving their best.
Heywood College outside Abbeyleix was the venue for the 2008 event. The course which is set in rolling fields surrounded by colourful autumn woodland was a typical traditional cross country setting. As the course was being laid on Saturday afternoon the latest deluge of 2008 turned the pasture into paddy fields.Runners were greeted with mud bath conditions on Sunday and it is a credit particularly to all the very young runners who got out and represented their club and county. The end of each race featured a search and recovery mission by parents and coaches scouring the course for lost shoes stuck in the mud as over a thousand young runners for team points and individual honours.
The Meath boys under 11 team took inter county bronze as did the girls team in the same age group and will now contest the nationals in Ballyhaise Co Cavan in early December.
Awards Presentation.
The Meath athletics awards were presented last Sunday in the Old Darnley, Athboy. Club members won seven awards in the senior and masters categories. We look forward to seeing some of the junior members getting among the prizes next season.
In the Meath Road League there were awards the best five results over the eight races in the series. Pat Comey finished first in the M60 grade, Maureen Lowther 2nd W35, Carrie Brogan 3 W45, Brian Cully 2nd M50, Ciaran Tobin 2nd. In the the masters track and field awards Moira Groome Peppard was the leading masters track athlete in the county and Moira Aston won the field events category. These awards were presented on the basis of their results during the year in masters championships at county, provincial and national level.

Cross Country success in Wicklow
28 Oct 2008 Pat Comey finished second in the M60 grade of the Leinster masters CC in Rathdrum on 26 Oct. The normally testing course through the scenic parkland of Avondale House was commando tough for Sundays race due to the torrents which fell on Saturday. Pat teamed up with Brendan Meade and Ollie Payne to win the over 50 inter county grade.
Ann Tobin finished 4th in the W45 and was a member of the womens team that claimed silver behind Offaly in the inter counties.

Marathon finishing times
28 Oct 2008 Well done to the Trim AC members on their efforts in the 2008 Dublin Marathon. First of the quartet was Sean Murphy who completed the course in a new pb of 3.14. afterwards Sean said he was glad of the descent past Elm Park back through Ballsbridg after the hardship of hitting the 20 mark along Clonsekagh and Roebuck. He went through the first half of the race vitually bang on one and a half hours. He was very pleased with his effort and reckons that he can cut the pb further next year with a bit more distance work.
The next from the club was David Hawcroft who was trying to break 3.30 to secure an automatic placing in the 2009 London Marathon.David has written a description of his performance and the outcome which is included later in this article.
Maureen Lowther was delighted with her performance despite having to get into the ambulance for "running repairs" to a wonky toenail within the last 2 miles.Nevertheless she equalled her Dublin pb of 3.43 and banished the memory of her Belfast run last May.
Just 3 minutes behind Maureen was Brian Cully in a time of 3.46 which delighted Brian who had battled with a chest infection in recent weeks and it forced him to complete last months Great North Run in a more stressed than normal condition. He was delighted to avail of the physio service at race end to unknot his hamstring.
All in All the four were very pleased with Dublin on a day when the dry crisp autumn conditions were favourable for the 26 mile trek.Well Done Read On... |

Knock knock knocking on queen maeves door!!!
05 Sep 2008 Every year over 400 hardy individuals gather in Strandhill, County Sligo to take part in the Knocknaree Warriors 10 mile race.It takes competitors from the Cannon Gun at the beachfront in Strandhill to the top of Knocknarea, around Queen Maeves Cairn and back to the beachfront again. For the uninitiated, a 15 Kilometre race might seem easy. Not the Warriors Run! The race is classified as a road and hill race or multi-terrained, so whilst approximately seven of its miles are on paved roads, it is the special three miles in the middle, to the top of Knocknarea that gives the race its bite. These three miles include a 700 foot climb on loose gravel, unsurfaced and grass paths. At its steepest incline on the way up, even the most professional athlete slows to a walk and then brace themselves to face the equally daunting downhill run, back down the often slippery slopes, even in the driest of weather.
With one of the wettest years ever recorded this years event was a big challenge. David Hawcroft from Trim AC relished the task and finished 17th in the over 45 category despite being in the over 60s grade in standard road racing and cross country competitions.David recorded a time of 1h22m in conditions described as brutal.
The previous weekend the Frank Duffy 10 mile road race was staged in the Phoenix Park where Maureen Lowther ran a time of 1h15m to finish 11th in the W35 category of Trim AC while the aforementioned David Hawcroft completed the course in a time of 1h13m to gain 3rd in the M60 grade.
At the Northern Ireland Masters track and field championships held at the Mary Peters track in Belfast, Ciaran Tobin won the M45 triple jump and finished second to Stephen Carroll, Lagan Valley in the long jump.

adidas 10
17 Aug 2008 Maureen Lowther and David Hawcroft did the Adidas 10 miles in Phoenix Park on Sat and got an absolutely remarkable weather window for 2 hours or so; perfect running conditions between Armageddon beforehand and the end of the world rain storm afterwards.
Maureen was placed 621 overall and 11th in the F35 cat with a chip time of 1.15.48 and David got 441 overall, 3rd in the M60 with a chip of 1.13.07. Both were pleased with their performances since that last hill was very very long and there was a bit of a wind along the main central road. Results display so far doesn't show how many finishers there were but apparently about 2000 entered

ASTON victors
16 Aug 2008 The Athletics Ireland national masters t & f championships were held in Tullamore on Saturday. Trim Athletic Club were represented by Tony Aston, Pat Comey, Moira Aston, Moira Peppard and Ciaran Tobin. Most of the early action was conducted in “normal” Irish summer weather conditions but the monsoon hit with a vengeance in the mid afternoon. The deterioration in conditions made jumping and throwing very hazardous.
This didn’t deter Tony Aston who won his first ever national title in the M3 hammer with a throw of 29.56. He was also in the shake up in the other throws occupying fourth position in the javelin, discus and shot. A family double was completed when county competition secretary Moira Aston entered the hammer circle and topped the W3 with a throw of 22.13m. She later completed a set of throwing medals taking second places in the shot ,discus and javelin.
On the track Moira Peppard added a national silver medal to her Leinster title in the 200m and finished third in the W2 100m. In the M3 long jump Ciaran Tobin finished a disappointing fourth in an event won by Pat Mahon from Gowran. Pat Comey took to the track for the 5000m and finished second to his masters international colleague Pat O Shea from Iveragh AC. Less than an hour later he went back out into the torrents for a 1500m race in which he finished runner up to Pat Timmons from Raheny.

Trim Athletes throw well in Leinsters
22 Jun 2008 Trim Athletes throw well in Leinsters
Athletes from all over Leinster gathered at the Tullamore Harriers track for the 2008 provincial track and field championships on Saturday 21 June. The longest day of the year became a real test of endurance as the under 13/19 championships were staged in awful miserable and wet conditions. There was good news for Trim when Shane Aston finished 3rd in the u15 hammer with a 30.27m best performance. Andrew Lynam was 2nd in the u/16 hammer with a throw of 27.50m.
On Sunday the rains were replaced by gale force winds. Once again the two Trim boys got into medal placings to qualify for the AAI national championships next month. Shane took two silvers with 30.26m in the javelin and 23.20m and clubmate Andrew threw 26.42m in the under 16 javelin for his second silver of the weekend. Both athletes were members of the 2008 Athletics Leinster Development Squad along with David Tobin who helped Meath to 2nd place in the Premier Division with his 6.16m long jump at the same venue last weekend. The other Trim members who put in good performances at these championships were Clare McLernon, Georgia Malone and Ruth Quinn who took part in shot and long jump events.
Well done to all.

Orienteering is a big hit.
22 Jun 2008 The orienteering event organised by John Rowe with great assistance from his orienteering colleague Tommy Burke. The event which introduced our juveniles to the sport of orienteering was a resounding success. The decision to encourage parental participation enhanced the evening and made it a fun filled adventure which should become a regular feature of the club.

In the womens race the club was represented by Ann Tobin,Carrie Brogan, Helen Power and Andrea Perle. Andrea followed up on her junior category prize in the Simon Cumber race last month with a very good 2nd spot in the junior womens. The host club laid on great post race entertainment with a bbq, sing song and the much publicised turf fires. ( very welcome as the sun set on the 2nd longest day!!!)Judging by the great turnout it seems the the Meat Autism Network would have benefitted well from the activities.

If you go down to the woods

The 4 Race Series is staged in the woodland trails along the shores of Lough Ennel. The traffic free route helps make it one of the most successful mass participation events in the country. This year there was a very good turnout of Trim runners who were delighted to avail of the opportunity to try improve their 5km times each week.

Joe Mc Nally made a winning return after an absence of three years to take first in the over 50s grade and David Hawcroft continued the Trim masters winning ways with a victory in the over 60 grade. Joe was delighted with his return to form and the consistency of his performances. David used the series to sharpen up for his Wicklow way relay leg on 7th June.
Other Trim runners who were well pleased with their 4 runs were Sean Murphy who finished among the top seniors each week. Brian Cully, Enda Markey,& Ciaran Tobin put in a good series of times and there was an intense rivalry between Brendan Gilligan and John Canning and we all await the overall aggregate times to see who earns bragging rights.

07 May 2008 Hill Run Win
Ann Tobin was the winner of the latest round of the Irish Mountain Running Association summer league on Howth Head last Wednesday. She finished one and a half minutes ahead of Eva Fairmaner, Crusaders in a welcome return to the form of 2006 having missed most of last summers mountain runs through injury.
BELFAST MARATHON
Maureen Fay and Aine Kenny made the trip to Belfast on Monday for the Belfast Marathon. Both runners are part of the TRIM FIT4LIFE training group and they both put in great efforts in a race which finished in a carnival atmosphere in brilliant sunshine on the banks of the Lagan. This race has a very well supported relay event which runs in conjunction with the individual 26 miler. One of the attractions of this is that there are little or no "lonely" sections in the route although the sight of the 5th leg relay runner striding past you at mile 23 or 24 can be a bit disconcerting.
Orienteering
Fingal Orienteering Club is hosting a series of events in the Tara area to promote the sport of Orienteering in Co. Meath. ....Hill of Tara Saturday, May 10th......Balrath Wood Sunday, May 25th.......Starting times for each event will be from 11am to 1pm Prizes will be awarded for the overall series. Meath T & F day`1
07 May 2008 County T & F
The first day of the Meath county athletics Championships took place in Claremont Stadium, Navan on Sunday 4th May.
The overcast morning gave way to brilliant sunshine around midday and there were a number of bright performances from the Trim athletes. The wisdom of staging the county championships on a bank holiday weekend is questionable. Many clubs taking part reported a higher than usual number of absentees.Trim AC are looking forward a much better turnout of members particularly at Claremont next Sunday 11 May.
The youngest winner was Sean McLernon who won the under 9 ball throw with a mighty 23m effort. Clubmate Aongus Shortt took 4th in the same event with a 18m throw.
Andrew Lynam won the u/16 javelin and Shane aston was a convincing winner of the u/15 shot putt. both boys have been part of the Leinster development squad and have taken part in specialist coaching over the winter months. they take part in the North Leinster Schools cships this week.
David Tobin jumped 6.25 for victory in the junior mens long jump. He had a very consistant round of jumps with 4 of his jumps in or around the 6.20m mark. He was runner up in the junior mens 100m which was won by former national 200m champion Jason Tango.
Clare McLernon put in a great performance in the under 15 high jump with a 1.35m winning jump. In the under 13 shot putt Ruth Quinn finished third. Nicole Smith and Caoimhe Eivers both put in great performances in their heats to get into the u/9 60m final. Ruairi Shortt and Fergal O Keane put in good efforts in the throws while the under 13 boys long jump featured Cillian shortt (new pb 3.12m) and the Carney twins Lee and Shane. Well Done Lads and the best of luck next weekend.
The masters events saw Moira Peppard doninant in the 100m ( as expected from a national indoor sprint title holder) and third in the longjump. The masters 1500m saw a great run by Pat Comey who took third place behind runners to whom he was conceding 15-20 years.

Schools success
07 May 2008 Morton Stadium basked in brilliant sunshine on Weds. 7th May for the first day of the 2008 North Leinster schools cships.
Shane Aston, representing Boyne CS ,finished 2nd in junior boys javelin with a 32m throw. In the girls events Clare McLernon was 2nd long jump and 3rd high jump, Amy Peppard returned to top form with a 2nd place in the javelin and Laura Dempsey was a great winner of the 500m. All four have been active members of Trim AC and it is great to see them doing so well in schools competition. The club wish them well in the forthcoming Leinsters.
Best of luck to David Tobin and Andrew Lynam in their events on friday.

Connemara Ultra Marathon
David Hawcroft,Trim AC was among the competitors in the gruelling Connemara Ultra Marathon last weekend. David ran through the half marathon mark in a very credible 1h45m and his 3.45 for the 26 mile mark was an outstanding effort given the nature of the terrain in and around Killary harbour, Leenane and Maam Cross. Then he had another 14 miles for his ultra event with the toughest weather conditions of any of the six years since its inception.. He crossed the line finally in a time of 6.05 to win the over 60 category and was also well up in the overall master grades.
David 4th at Nenagh
David Tobin, Trim AC was over finished fourth in the under 19 long jump with a 6.11m effort in the sixth round which was well short of his season best of 6.45m in February when winning the Leinster Junior long jump.A great action photo of David in full flight also featured prominently in the reports on the AAI website.

Leinster victories for Trim
10 Mar 2008 Trim AC was well represented at the Leinster Indoor track and field championships in Nenagh on Sunday (10 March).
In the masters women W2 category Moira Peppard from Trim AC recorded a double in the sprints with 60m and 200m and then headed the field in the W2 long jump.

His performance also bettered the winning jump in the senior mens competition.
In the mens 200m Will McNamara ,Trim AC made the very best of a bad draw in the inside lane to finish fifth in a competition which was decided on time over all the heats rather than on the usual heats and final system.
In the masters mens events Paddy Reilly ,St Andrews once again got a provincial shot putt medal when finishing second in the M5 shot putt in an event which was won with a national age group record. Ciaran Tobin,Trim AC won the M3 triple jump ahead Pat Power from Kilkenny and was second behind John Territ, St Abbans in the M3 high jump later in the day.

200 gold in Nenagh
23 Feb 2008 Masters Gold
Moira Peppard Trim AC took the gold in the W2 category 200m at the AAI indoor championships in Nenagh on Saturday. She had over ten metres to spare over Ann Mc Carthy from Bandon in a race which she took control of when coming out of the stagger on the back straight. The compact nature of the indoor track was perfectly suited to the Trim runner who earlier in the morning had missed out on the dip by .13 seconds in the 60m after an exciting tussle with Geraldine Finnegan from Dunleer AC.
In the M3 long jump Ciaran Tobin took the silver with a jump of 4.85 in the second round.
The next masters track and field action takes place at the same venue on Sunday 9th March when the Leinster junior , senior and masters competition takes place.

County Matters
13 Jan 2008
TRACK NEWS

Events planned are 60m,200m,400m and 800m.The age grades are u/12/14/16/18 with junior races if there is sufficient demand. Club officials are asked to check with Co Board before setting out on Tuesday evening if there is a deterioration in weather conditions. The installation of floodlighting at the Navan venue means that local athletes will have a chance of winter track competition.
The Odyssey Arena in Belfast will be the venue for the 2008 Irish indoor championships on Sat.26 and Sun. 27 January. The Odyssey will once again be transformed into a showcase for top class athletics for the biggest event in the Irish Indoor Athletics calendar, with competition for places on the Irish Team for the World Indoors in Valencia.
The county board will hold an indoor track and field event at Cushinstown AC indoor facility just off the N2 at Kilmoon on Sunday 10 February. Clubs and athletes who are preparing for the Leinster indoor championships in Nenagh will benefit from this meet as there will be a comprehensive programme including sprints, long jump, high jump and shot putt competitions.
Website Launched
Star of the Sea AC have launched their new website at http://community.meath.ie/starofthesea.There are features on all aspects of the East Meath club. The club has joined the Meath County Council web project "Communities Online Together" which has already facilitated St Brigids AC, Trim AC, Cushinstown AC, Meath Athletics Board and numerous other social, sporting and cultural groups with internet sites.
Winter league races deferred
The second leg of the winter juvenile league scheduled for Trim on Sunday 13 January was postponed due to bad weather. The programme of under age relays from under 9s upwards will be rescheduled for early spring. In the meantime Dunshaughlin AC will host the next series of races at the Community College playing fields on Sunday 17th February, 12pm.
Level 2 Coaching
The regional development officer of the AAI, Bart Rodgers is anticipating that the level two coaching course which begins on Friday 1 Feb. will attract the many of the enthusiastic new coaches who came through during the past year. The structure of the course is as follows.
Candidates will be given an introduction into the physiology, biomechanics and psychology of athletics. There will also be workshops on Nutrition, communication and planning etc.It is open to coaches who have completed level one and have coached over a sufficient period of time. The course will be conducted over four Friday nights in February and conclude with a day long summary session in March. All candidates will qualify in two event group disciplines. Athletics Ireland offer the following choices :Sprints and Endurance, Sprints and Jumps, Jumps and Throws, Endurance and Throws. Coaches who wish to take part should contact Brendan Meade or Bart Rodgers immediately as places are on a first come first served basis. The county board has worked very hard with the coaching staff of AAI to put this course on at night rather than over a series of weekends .It was felt that the association should try to facilitate participation by coaches who are busy most weekends with their young club members attending competitions and officiating.

Porchfields Report
30 Dec 2007
The county cross country championships were held at Porchfields Trim on Sunday. Trim AC won club team medals in three events. The presence of a a former juvenile county cross country champion in the form of Minister Noel Dempsey must have inspired the local effort. The club was well represented in its "home" fixture and we are lucky to have access to one of the best cross country courses in Ireland.
Boys under 10 4x250 metres relay the third team was the Trim quartet of Peter Honer, Conor Cooke, Edward Doran, Ruairi Shortt. In the other juvenile races there were good performances from all our teams with three of the squads just missing out on medals.(u 10 girls and u12 boys and girls)
Senior Women B race there was a fine silver medal performance by Bernie Dunne, Attracta Doran and Deirdre Loughran. It was just like old times for Bernie and Attracta who were part of an all conquering Trim womens team in the eighties while Deirdre is a newcomer to running through our flourishing Winter FIT4LIFE scheme. In the A race Ann Tobin, Maureen Lowther and Mairead Shortt finished fourth , one point off the bronze. In the mens race there was a team medal for Joe Brady, John Canning , Brendan Gilligan and Brian Cully.
The club would like to thank the parents who helped out on the day, the council for access to the Porchfields,Sgt. Donal Smith, the Red Cross, Paddy Mangan from Dunshaughlin AC , town foreman Anthony Conlon and Minister Noel Dempsey. The host club put a lot of effort into making this event a success but were disappointed by the fact that so few of the other affiliated to the county board contributed to the 'on the day organisation'. Unfortunately this is a recurring feature at most events in most sports...
The FIT4LIFE group was very well represented at the Donore Harriers ' Jingle Bells 5km' held on Sunday 2nd Dec.A lovely scenic course around the southern end of the Phoenix Park near the OSI office and St Marys Hospital was the venue. The race has a reputation as a great fun event with participants entering into the festive spirit with seasonal attire and the aforementioned jingle bells ringing For many of these runners this event was a pleasant surprise and many of them reported that it was preferable to the mini marathon despite its place on the calendar. They all hope to be back for more.
WELL DONE to 2 athletes from neighbouring clubs Andrew Ledwith, Fr Murphy AC and Sarah Treacy, Moynalvey AC who represented Ireland with distinction at last weekends European Cross country championships. it is an inspiration to youg athletes to have such finae ambassadors fro the sport opreating with local clubs. they are a credit to their families and clubs the manner in which they train and compete. Two great sporting role models for all. WELL DONE.

Trim Selected
27 Sep 2007 Fit4Life Meet n Train Groups
Athletics Ireland is pleased to announce the 30 groups who will take part in the Fit4Life Programme for 2007. The Fit4Life Programme is a joint initiative between Athletics Ireland and the Irish Sports Council under their Women in Sport initiative.
The Fit4Life Programme is aimed at recreational runners. From the evidence of events such as the Women’s Mini Marathon, there are thousands of ‘recreational runners’ in the country, but many of these are not members of any club. Feedback from the 2006 Fit4Life Programme strongly supported the idea of having a support structure for these ‘recreational runners’ where they can enjoy all the benefits of running in a social, safe and organised environment and also receive tips and advice on training etc.
Following on from this Athletics Ireland in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council are hoping to encourage athletic clubs to set up a section in their club entitled Fit4Life to cater for recreational runners. These are runners who enjoy training and competing in open events for personal challenge and enjoyment. They see running as a means of getting and staying fit but they would like to avail of the company of other like minded runners. Athletic clubs are the ideal vehicle for runners like this to pursue their interest and get advice and encouragement as they train
The success of this Programme in a club will depend on the people who lead it. Athletics Ireland is providing support to all of the participating clubs to help them establish a Fit4Life Programme in their club. The first step is to provide training for the individuals who will organise the Programme. These people will be known as’Fit4LifeLeaders’. Athletics Ireland is running a training course for potential leaders from each of the clubs. Each club can send three people to the course free of charge. The Fit4Life Leader Training Course will be held in the ALSA Complex, near Dublin Airport on Saturday October 13th from 10am to 4pm.

Well Done
Club members Amy Peppard and Clare McLernon put in some very good efforts for Scoil Mhuire at the Leinster Schools combined events in Santry last week. Both girls set new pbs in the high jump and were generally pleased with their long jumping and hurdling. They will be eligible once again for the same category in 2008 where they hope to progress further up the provincial ranks. Scoil Mhuire and Boyne CS will be sending teams to the Meath Schools CC in Gormanston this week and we hope that our members perform well . .
Training
All juvenile members are asked to report for training on Monday evening 6pm to the Porchfields.. Adult run every Sunday morning. There is a very strong possibility that the club will be chosen by Athletics Ireland to host a series of FIT4LIFE events over the autumn and winter. The club feel that the success of the Trim For Spring meet and train group earlier in the year will count in our favour with this scheme which is aimed at increasing the participation of the wider community in running / walking events and training programmes. The club also need to know who will be available to compete in the County cross country championships so that we can make group travel arrangements. New singlets will be available for purchase at training. Contact Catherine on 087 2129404

Bouyed by his successful trip to Tullamore on Saturday he set about his task in Santry against top senior competitiors in the second round of the ESB League with relish. Beach Run a great success.
24 Jul 2007 “Barbeque………I’m there”
The runners who gathered for the first ever Meath Athletics beach run on Tuesday 17th July were blessed to have three hours in the summer of 2007 that did not feature a deluge. The event attracted support from right across the county as far as Longwood and Ballinacree.
At around seven o’clock the first arrivals jogged to the mouth of the Delvin river as they familiarised themselves with their surroundings. Gormanston Beach with the Cooleys and the mouth of the historic Boyne to the north and the light of Rockabill to the south was the wonderful setting for an event which began with juvenile races and a sandcastle competition. Then there was a senior 5km beach run to which took the 70 runners to Ben Head. There was a friendly sociable atmosphere as the runners stood around in t-shirts and shorts on one of this years rare fine evenings.
Chairman of Meath Athletics Board Brendan Meade was given great assistance by his own club colleagues from Star of the Sea AC in feeding the multitudes. Their ranks were greatly helped by the culinary prowess of county board officers Rita Brady and Martin Heery. Navigational aids and signage were arranged by the Dunshaughlins master athlete and now master of ceremonies Paddy Mangan.
Bohermeen AC, Dunshaughlin AC and the host club Star of the Sea featured prominently in all the juvenile races. The senior event brought together regular club runners from St Brigids, Tara, South O Hanlon,Na Fianna and Trim alongside numerous meet and train runners and some new marathon converts.. The newly crowned AAI under age 800m champion Turloch Grant and young cross country star Thomas Moran acquitted themselves well on the east Meath sands.
If ever there was a run where taking part was the all important feature this was it. Perhaps we should reflect on the real reason why most of us run. Is it not for the sheer joy of being fit and able to get up and go. The county has one of the smallest coastlines in the country but we are privileged to have some of the very best strands which are ideal for events of this nature
All those who took part were very happy with how the event was run and it is hoped that it will become a regular feature of local athletics calendar.
We all had a good bit of crack, a lovely run at a brilliant venue and great hospitality.
The weather was an unexpected bonus!

In the girls under 14 hammer Amy Peppard qualified for the final eight where she threw a great personal best of 18,89m in a competition which was won in convincing style by Karen Monaghan from Fr Murphy AC who launched the hammer out to 32.33m.
David Tobin equalled his personal best set two weeks ago in the ESB national league when he recorded a 12.03m effort in the opening round of the under 18 triple jump to finish just outside the medals in fourth place. Later on Saturday he threw the javelin 37.83 to take fith in that event.

Busy Weekend
06 Jun 2007
Leinster Masters victories.
The awful weather conditions on Sunday morning failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the Trim group which travelled to the Leinster senior and masters championships in Tullamore. Moira Aston won the M2 javelin and the hammer . While Tony Aston threw the javelin over 33m to win the M3 title. On the track Moira Peppard was silver medallist in the 100m and 200m. The Trim masters are now gearing up for the national championships at the same venue in August. They have a very good record in masters events at home and abroad with Pat Comey recently picking up a European silver last month in Bavaria.
Mini Marathon
Maureen Lowther, Ann Tobin, Mairead Shortt, Niamh Holmes, Helen Power, Gillian Doyle, Petrina O’Shea, Helene Quigley, Ann Gorman, Frances Nugent, Mary Murphy, Emily Olagnon, Roisin McGale, were well to the fore of the field of an estimated 51,000 women who went to the start line for the Dublin Womens Mini Marathon. They were all involved in the Trim for Spring meet and train group which the club had organised this year with the Meath Local Sports Partnership. The next events coming up in the area are the Bohermeen 5km on Friday 22 June and Dunshaughlin 10km Sat. evening 30th June. The Star of the Sea Athletic Club have planned a novel 5km Beach Race from Gormanston to Ben Head on 17th July. This is one of the few such events in Ireland.

Pats victory in the 0ver 55 grade meant that he took Leo McKenna Memorial in scenes of rapturous applause in Johnstownbridge.
He completed the Na Fianna 5km in a very good time of 18mins.

The club had a far better turnout of members than at the two championship days. The league format seems to be more popular with some clubs than others.

Irelands Greatest ever long jumper
01 Jun 2007 Ciaran McDonagh from neighbouring club Fr Murphy AC has announced his retirement from athletics. Ciaran qualified for the final of the 1999 world championships in Seville with a new Irish record of 8 metres and went on to finish 10th in the final. In 2005 in Cork he produced some prodigious crowd-gasping performances and a windy 8.09 metres to finish a close 2nd to the Olympic champion Dwight Phillips. He finished 2005 with a new Irish record of 8.07 metres ( 26ft 6 ins ) in Switzerland. Sadly a recurring injury has meant that Ciaran has brought down the curtain on a career which saw him rise to the top world rankings in a field event. Ciarans talent and his world status in a field event was a truly unique achievement in the modern era of Irish athletics

The club officials and coaches are looking forward to a much better turnout of members at next Sundays event. It was disappointing that the club could not field even one team in any of the 10 relay races contested. It was a pity for those children who remained that their colleagues who turn out in droves to training each week failed to appear at the major county competition to make up a team.
The club would like to thank the parents who volunteered to assist in the events. It was thanks to their efforts under the guidance of county board development officer Moira Aston that these were the most efficiently organised championships ever.

Level One Coaching
30 Apr 2007
Level One coaches progress. Joe Brady Moira Aston,Moira Peppard and Ciaran Tobin from Trim AC were among the latest group to undertake the Level One coach training at Claremon Stadium, Navan.
The latest level one coaching programme for this region concluded with a back to back two day session on 28/29 April. There were thirty coaches taking part from clubs in Meath, Westmeath, Dublin and Wicklow.
Meath Athletics Coaching Coordinator Tom Clinton commended all the participants and said that he was confident that they would make a great contribution to the future development of the sport .He hoped to see them go a stage further into the level two course. He urged the clubs to consult him and their fellow coaches on issues. He hoped that their will be a better sharing of coaching resource and expertise among local clubs.
RDO Bart Rogers complimented the coaches on completion of the course which ran over four evenings and two days. He saw a full range of skills being used by the trainee coaches in the presentations, demonstrations and tuition over the final two days. In conclusion he asked all those who took part to make every effort to encourage teenage athletes and develop their love of the sport.
He told the latest group of level one coaches that the Meath / Louth area has made significant progress in the past year in the field of coach education. The AAI coach education plan which was developed in conjunction with the National Coach Training Centre at University of Limerick was progressing very well and improving the pool of coaching talent necessary for the proper development of a new generation of athletic talent.

Here Comes the Summer
29 Apr 2007
Pat Comey and David Hawcroft had excellent runs in the AAI 10km championships in Navan. Pat finished 5th in V5 with a 39.20 effort. David finished in 4th place in the V6 grade with a time of 42.43. On Weds. night David Tobin took second place in the Dublin graded long jump at Irishtown track.
There will need to be a lot better turnout of club members at the rest of the inter club league fixtures this summer. The club hope that some sense of commitment and club spirit will manifest itself at the county championships. It is an insult to the coaches, committee, colleagues and their parents when the club is blatently used as a creche on Mondays.Taking part is the whole point.
The throwing competitions of the Meath T & F took place on Sat. 28 April. Medal winners for Trim were Shane Aston, Amy Peppard, Moira Aston, Tony Aston, Moira Peppard, well done to all.
The road running season is hotting up. there are numerous races on the calendar over the next few months which are well within the reach of Meath runners. They deserve your support.

In the ultra marathon which took the runners on a 40 mile route through Leenane and Maam Cross the top finisher in the mens over 60s category was David Hawcroft from Trim Athletic club. David who has a great record in ultra endurance events completed the course in 5h 53m.

Vintage performances

Trim woman records national double.
The Athletics Ireland masters indoor championships were held in Nenagh on Saturday, 20th January. Hundreds of veterans from Ireland and beyond gathered in the country’s only dedicated indoor athletics arena to contest titles in six grades over 35s to over 60s.
Una Crowley from Trim AC won both the 60m and the 200m in the W3 grade (over 45) while her club colleague Moira Peppard found the compact track to her liking with a gold en performance in the W2 200m.In the mens sprints Tom Clinton held off his great rival Tom Leech to clinch the M5 60 metres title. Later in the day Pat Comey who trained with the legendary middle distance coach Arthur Lydiard while living in Australia put his experience to good use with a great tactical victory in the M5 3000m.
Bobby King from Dunboyne AC was once again the star of the mens 3km walk with the perennial Pam Reynolds from St Andrews also taking the honours in her walks category. Both of these walkers have years of national and international age group walking success to their credit.
In the field events Tony and Moira Aston from Trim AC recorded a unique family double with each of them jumping into second spot in their respective high jump competitions. Most of these will be back in action at the same venue on Sunday 28th January when the rescheduled Leinster indoors take place.

2006 Meath Athletics Awards
20 Nov 2006
The 2006 Meath Athletics awards were presented by AAI president Michael Heery and Meath Athletics chairman Brendan Meade at the Old Darnley Hotel, Athboy on Sunday 19 Nov.
Michael Heery expressed his optimism with the new development plans of the association and hoped that the appointment of Regional Development Officers would help progress the sport in the area and wished Bart Rodgers the North East RDO who was in attendance well in his efforts. The AAI is committed to sending teams to all future junior u/23 and senior international championships. He was confident that some of the rising stars of the local scene will be selected to represent Ireland on these teams. He is eagerly looking forward to the County Senior Cross Country championships in Trim given the performances of recent weeks by Meath clubs and individuals in the Leinsters and on the roads.
Brendan Meade was very happy with the achievements of the county mens senior squad in the National T & F league. He hoped that the men and women will continue their progression in 2007. He was impressed with the team spirit and sees this as important in the effort to maintain the involvement of older teenagers and young adults in competitive athletic activity.Twelve out of sixteen local clubs were represented on these teams. The summer league was a very worthwhile effort as it gave an extra outlet to the majority of registered athletes of all ages and abilities with the team ethic to the fore. EXCHANGE VISIT ANOTHER SUCCESS
31 Oct 2006 Four members of Les Globetrotteurs de Etrepagny ( from our twin town in Normandy )took part in the Dublin Marathon over the October weekend.
The Dublin Marathon visit was the latest sporting exchange between the
Trim Athletic Club and the Union Sportif d'Etrepagny which began in 2004 when the Trim club took part in the Foullies 11km road race in Normandy. This athletics twinning is one of the more unique sporting exchanges between Ireland and France. There is another exchange taking place this week in Etrepagny where a Trim Celtic under age squad is taking on the young pretenders to Zidanes crown in a series of games.
The first finisher from Etrepagny was Guillaume Defrance with a 3h11m effort. It was his 15th time to complete a marathon and he was pleased with the Dublin experience. He was followed by training colleague Olivier Aube who competed the course in 3h20m and was his best ever time.
The next finisher from our twin town was Joan Gauthier who completed her first attempt at the classic endurance event in just over 4 hours.Earlier this year she took part in a half marathon on the slopes of Mont Blanc.
Bertrand Salle who made his road running debut earlier this year at the Dunboyne 4 followed up his promise to revisit Ireland in style by completing his first ever marathon.
Trim AC have been invited to send a senior/masters team to take part in the 2007 Etrepagny Foulles 11km.

10 Oct 2006
Cross Country season begins.
Day 1 of the Meath Cross Country championships took place at the Fr Murphy athletic club in Frayne, Athboy on Sun. 1 Oct. There was a very good turnout of Trim runners and a number of medal winning performances.

In the under 13 boys race Tadhg Eivers followed his fine run the week before at the Star of the Sea races in Stamullin with a great run which yielded a bronze medal and a place on the county cross country team which will contest the Leinster championships later this month in Belvedere House, Mullingar. The masters races produced two medal winners with Moira Peppard taking third in the over 40 grade and Ann Tobin finishing first in the over 45 grade.

Exchange Visit
Les Globetrotteurs De Etrepagny seem to be madly in love with the Ireland this year with a second batch of French runners coming over to take part in the Dublin City Marathon. Earlier in the year a group from our twin town ran in the Dunboyne 4 and seem to have enjoyed the Irish running scene and Trim hospitality so much that they have now arranged for four members to run in the top 26 miler in the country.
Well Done
Well done to club members Sara Magee,Eleanor Murphy, Shane Aston, Ciara Shelly,David Tobin ,Ruth Quinn, Lucy Gormley,Ashling Loughlin, Clare McLernon, Emma Shelly,Annmarie Mulhaire, Louise Magee, Ashling Fagan, Edward Doran,Anna Honan ,Eimer O Keane,Lorraine Mulhaire, Amy Peppard, who took part in recent inter club and schools athletics events. It is very satisfying to see club members representing their school as well as the club at competitions.
The club is concentrating on cross country running at this stage of the season and our training is going very well for the juveniles at the moment. Over the summer the club installed two new throwing circles and a runway/jump pit at the Boyne community School playing fields. We are fundraising to continue these improvements to our training facilities over the winter months. Trim Athletic Club are very grateful to Stephen Nally, and Nuala Smith from Supervalu for facilitating last weekend fundraiser at the store.

Meath second in National League
23 Aug 2006
The finals of the Hibernian National Athletics League took place in Tullamore Harriers stadium on Sunday 20th August. Athletes from the top club and county teams in Ireland gathered to contest the 2006 Premier and First Division finals for men and women.
Both the Meath mens and womens teams had shown great commitment and team spirit in the previous rounds of the league at the University of Limerick in July and earlier in August at Cork Institute of Technology. The placings on both days set the squads up well in the pool rankings coming into the finals. At the end of Sundays events there was a second place finish for the mens team and a promotion to premier division action for 2007.
The experienced throwers on the team were influential in point scoring in Tullamore. There are a number of emerging junior talents in the other mens events who have a bright future ahead of them. The womens team which has an even stronger emphasis on youth finished the league in fourth spot and should be in the shake up for divisional honours with another season under their belts. Silver struck in Tullamore
17 Aug 2006 Four silvers for Trim
The Irish Masters Athletics championships were held at Tullamore Harriers Stadium today.13 August. These championships are organised by the Athletics Association of Ireland in cooperation with the Irish Masters Athletics Association.
Competitions are held in 5 year age bands from over 35 upwards and cover a full range of track and field disciplines from 100m to 5000m on the track and all the jumps and throws including the traditional 56lbs for distance.
Moira Peppard came away from these championships with three silvers. In a very competitive 100m she was just touched off in a tight finish by Geraldine Finnegan from Dunleer. Later in the day she followed up her Leinster 200m victory last May with a great national silver She finished her day at the Offaly venue with another second placing in the W40 long jump.
Club colleague Pat Comey who competes in the M55 age category ran an excellent 5000 metres in 18m42s and finished in second spot. He then ran a very good fourth place in the M55 1500m..
In the IMRA trail league at Kilmashogue on Wednesday night Ann Tobin finished second behind Laura McGinley from Rathfarnham AC. At the end of July she completed the Leinster Hill Running league with an overall second place based on her best results in 7 out of 11 races.
|
July News
04 Aug 2006 Ann Tobin took second spot in the Ballinastoe race of the Leinster Hill Running League. This result consolidated her position in the overall standing and the experience of last season is serving her well with improvements in each of this seasons events.
Pat Comey finished second in the M55 category of the South O’Hanlon 5km with a time of 18.35m and Ann Tobin was third in the W45grade with a 22.41m effort. The race was held in ideal weather conditions over a new course which was a credit to the organising club.
On Sunday 16th July Trim athletes were in track & field action in two Munster venues. At the Cork Institute of technology Shane Aston finished an excellent 4th in the AAI childrens games ball throw with a best effort of 47.43m.He also finished 6th in the javelin with a throw of 22.50m
Laura Dempsey achieved a best shot putt performance of 7.05m in the Girls U/13 competition.Earlier this year Laura set a Leinster indoor shot putt record for her age group.
Over at the University of Limerick David Tobin got his first taste of senior competitive action on the Meath team for the National League. His 5.92m jump was good enough for second place & represents an improvement of 26cm in his personal best.He threw the javelin 30.36m to get 4th place for the team which tops the divisional table after the first round. There was another 4th spot for his brother Robert in the triple jump.
The next round of the National League action will be Sun. 16th Aug at a venue to be decided.
First at the Lisburn Half Marathon:
David Hawcroft was first in the Over 60 category with a time of 1.34.30 he had over 4minutes to spare over his nearest rival.

League Round 4
04 Aug 2006 Round 4 Inter club league
The final round of the Meath Interclub League took place at Claremount Stadium on Tuesday 25th July. The club finished in fifth place this year, a drop of two places from 2005. Unfortunately was an even lower turnout of members at this event than for rounds two and three. Holiday time could be a reason in July but the decline in numbers started once the school holidays started this year. There seems to be perception among parents that ALL club activities grind to a halt once the school holidays begin.
It is a disappointment to the club coaches that participation levels completely nosedived once youngsters were introduced to the fresh air after indoor training. We used to think there was a reluctance to attend cross country events but this now seems to affect the county track and field in May also!
It is unacceptable that a lot of time and effort goes into coaching and advising so many members throughout the winter and spring and they never show up to represent the club. These resources might be better used concentrating on those with a genuine interest.
The committee and coaches will be reviewing this situation in advance of resuming for the autumn cross country season. Committed youngsters of ALL abilities would benefit from more attention and advice.
Among those in action for the club at Claremont were Claire McLernon, Amy Peppard, Megan Peppard, Alan Carey, Emer Cunningham, Kate Kohistani, Ruby Kohistani, Ruth Quinn, Emer Quinn, Ann Marie Mulhaire, Lorraine Mulhaire and Lucy Gormley.A presentation and social was held in Claremount Hall after the track & field action.

NEW GOLD DREAM
11 Jun 2006 Moira Peppard sensationally beat Dunleers Geraldine Finnegan in the Leinster Masters W40 200m in Tullamore. The win was her first ever success over the Louth athlete who won numerous British indoor titles and contested the world masters in recent months.
Moira got away to a great start and led by a 4/5 metre margin out of the bend. the winter training paid dividends as she extended her lead coming to the line which was crossed in style ahead of Finnegan. The Dunleer athlete having been recussitated by first aid personnel then recovered sufficiently to contest and win the 100m.
Tony and Moira Aston brought home a bagful of throwing medals with very dominant displays in the shot, discus and javelin. They are now preparing for an assault on the national masters combined events at Claremont. Given their versatility both of them should be there or thereabouts in all discipline at the Navan venue.
Dave Hawcroft recovered 80m lost ground when he took off after the gun in the M55 1500 metres and got up for a medal despite the mix up.
